Last week since the passing of Nan, I have been reflecting on my memories of her, and the way that these memories make me smile... So I thought I would share some of them.Being one of the older grand kids has its advantages, I was able to spend allot of time with Nan and Pop in their home, and at the farm. One of my earliest memories is of riding on the back of Nan's little motorbike to collect the mail, and on arriving back at the house finding that my gumboot had all melted on one side because it had been up against the motor, (I did wonder why my leg had felt hot).
I would love breakfast at Nan and Pop's. They had an open fire in the kitchen and in the mornings Nan would let us toast our bread on the fire for breakfast, the toasting fork always hung next to the fire.
Nan's sponges were memorable!! She made the most amazing sponge cake, and she always had one ready to eat with fresh cream and jam.
I'm sure Nan could jelly anything!! There was jellied carrot, jellied, peas, jellied beetroot, jellied pineapple, and I could hardly believe it one day when she served it up..... jellied broad beans!!
Staying with Nan and Pop was so much fun, the days were filled with helping Pop on the farm, and the mornings and evenings with Nan's cooking and helping around the house - collecting the eggs, doing the dishes and having fun with cousins.
And Christmas, it was always so much fun!! Cousins everywhere, aunts and uncles and so much noise. Everyone trying to pile into the lounge room for presents... Pop handing them out and Nan just watching on always with a smile on her face sitting in her chair.
Such wonderful memories of such a wonderful woman....
